Give A Hoot And A Holler!
Maryland Winners Are In The House!
by Riselle Abrams
Let’s give a hoot and holler!!!! The state of Maryland and MAEA walked away with ten award winners at the National Art Education Association Conference in New Orleans for 2008. We have great cause to celebrate! Ten award winners in one region is a real coup and almost unheard of. This accomplishment speaks to the commitment, talent and dedication of our Maryland art educators.
The award winners from MAEA will have Eastern Region as part of their new found award titles. Maryland is part of the Eastern Region. The Eastern Region is comprised of the states on the East Coast from Maine to West Virginia as well as overseas group and parts of Canada. There are different regions that divide up the members for voting purposes and for organizational reasons within the NAEA. The other regions include the Pacific, Western, South Eastern.
We at M.A.E.A. are very proud of our award winners and they were recognized at an Eastern Region reception that was held in New Orleans during the convention. Winners were presented with certificates and a yellow tulip as well as some token gifts from New Orleans. If you were not in attendance at the reception you missed the loud and raucous Maryland delegation giving the wave. Congratulations to all involved!

Teacher Recognition!
MAEA Awards – 2006 Fall Conference
The Fall Conference provided the opportunity to recognize the efforts of outstanding art educators from throughout the state of Maryland at both the county and state levels. Their administrators, colleagues, and parents have acknowledged these teachers as educators who make a difference in the lives of their students and the art education profession. The Maryland Art Education Association was proud to provide a forum in which their peers could honor these teachers. This year MAEA were pleased to be able to honor three outstanding teachers at the state level.
Denise Webster, left, and
Lisa Stuart, right,
recipients of MAEA Art Teacher of the Year awards.
Lisa Stuart was honored as the MAEA Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. A teacher in the Montgomery County Public Schools, she is an energetic and dedicated art instructor who inspires both in and outside her art studio classroom. As a teacher, she is highly child-centered and committed to presenting rich learning experiences for her students. Lisa has been a tireless supporter of the NAEA/MAEA through her numerous and insightful presentations at both the state and national levels. Her recent development and implementation of Project Quality Time for the MCPSS was so successful that this program is now being considered for use by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Baltimore City School System. She continues her own professional growth and works at the county level representing all elementary art teachers in meetings related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction to represent all elementary art teachers in meetings related to curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
Recipient of the MAEA Middle School Art Teacher of the Year Award was Linda McConaughy, a model artist/teacher whose career has been devoted to quality art education for all children. She has taught in Baltimore County Public Schools for 19 years and is currently the Visual Art Teacher and Magnet Director at Parkville Middle School. Linda is a National Board Certified teacher, who has a thorough understanding of the county curriculum chairing the development of the “K – 12 Design Resource.” Linda has also worked for MSDE as a consultant on the Voluntary State Curriculum, has presented at NAEA National Conference, and during the summer months, has been the director of the BCPS Summer Art Enrichment Camp. Linda is truly an exceptional art educator and a person who has a profound impact on youth and the teaching community.
Denise Webster, the recipient of the MAEA High School Art Teacher of the Year Award has been in Baltimore County Public Schools for 23 years, teaching at all instructional levels. Currently the Department Chairman at Loch Raven High School, she works tirelessly to help her students succeed, and exhibits a positive, can-do attitude that is shared with students, teachers, and administration. Denise has been asked to share her expertise on many occasions, including BCPS, MAEA and NAEA presentations and workshops, and she has served in many curriculum workshops. Denise has mentored many young teachers both pre-service and as new teachers, and is an adjunct teacher for Loyola College. Denise is an art educator who has demonstrated exceptional service to her students, colleague, and community.

In addition to the acknowledgment of teachers at the county level, we will recognize a MAEA Elementary, Middle and High School Teacher of the Year. Any master teacher, who is a member of the MAEA/NAEA, selected by a county supervisor is qualified for consideration. Eligible teachers must submit a vita, a letter of nomination/or the county supervisor’s nomination, and a letter of recommendation. A letter of nomination and recommendation may be no more than one page in length. A standardized vita form is available online at www.mdarted.org. We are in hopes that this selection process makes the award have greater meaning at all levels – county, state, and national. |
